Many women in Uttar Pradesh are beginning to realise they have a say in marriage and don’t seem to be shying away from using that power lately. Over the past few months, Indian brides have called off their weddings because the groom was either bald, showed up drunk or wasn’t educated enough.
The latest addition to this string of unusual rejections emerged (yet again) from UP when a bride refused to marry her groom after he failed to hire a photographer for the wedding. The daughter of a farmer from a village in Kanpur Dehat district was reportedly supposed to tie knot with a man of Bhognipur. Preparations were near-complete with the stage fully decorated for the ‘Jaimala’ ceremony when the baraat arrived. After being welcomed to much fanfare by the bride’s family, the groom proceeded to the stage for the garland ceremony only for the bride to notice something was missing.
As soon as she realised there was no photographer to capture the big day, the infuriated bride left the stage and literally walked out on her groom just before the ceremony. She was reportedly at a neighbour’s house after she took off from the venue. Despite her family’s best efforts to convince her, the steadfast woman did not budge. "The man who did not care about our marriage today, how is he going to take care of me in the future?" she said.
